Contact lens fitting

Proper contact lens fitting is the key to comfortable vision, eye health, and confidence in everyday life. Contact lenses are a convenient alternative to glasses, but choosing them requires a professional approach and an individual consultation with a specialist.

During contact lens fitting, an ophthalmologist or optometrist performs a comprehensive eye examination, determines visual acuity, the type of refraction, corneal curvature radius, lens diameter, and eye sensitivity. The patient’s lifestyle, working conditions, duration of lens wear, and the presence of accompanying eye diseases are also taken into account.

Contact lens fitting

Modern contact lenses are made from high-quality materials that provide sufficient oxygen supply to the cornea and help keep the eyes moisturized. There are soft and rigid lenses, daily, monthly, or extended-wear lenses, as well as special toric lenses for astigmatism correction and multifocal lenses for age-related vision changes.

Incorrectly selected lenses can cause discomfort, dryness, eye redness, or even inflammatory processes. That is why it is not recommended to choose lenses on your own without consulting a specialist. Professional fitting ensures safe and comfortable use of contact lenses.

How to put on a contact lens correctly

Before putting on contact lenses, you should thoroughly wash your hands with soap and dry them with a lint-free towel. Make sure the lens is clean, undamaged, and positioned correctly — it should have the shape of a smooth bowl without folded edges.

Place the lens on the tip of your index finger. With your other hand, gently lift the upper eyelid, and with the middle finger of the same hand, pull down the lower eyelid. Looking straight ahead or slightly upward, carefully place the lens on the surface of the eye. Slowly release the eyelids and blink several times so that the lens settles into the correct position.

If you feel discomfort, remove the lens, rinse it with a special solution, and try putting it on again. Never use tap water to clean contact lenses.

Astigmatic contact lens fitting

Fitting astigmatic contact lenses requires particular precision, as astigmatism is associated with an irregular shape of the cornea or the lens of the eye. Special toric contact lenses are used to correct this disorder, as they have different optical powers in different meridians. During the fitting process, an ophthalmologist or optometrist determines not only the diopters, but also the axis and degree of astigmatism, the curvature radius, and the stability of the lens fit on the eye. Properly fitted astigmatic contact lenses provide a clear, stable image, reduce eye fatigue, and increase comfort in everyday life. Choosing such lenses independently is not recommended, as only professional fitting guarantees effective and safe vision correction.

Multifocal contact lens fitting

Multifocal contact lens fitting is performed to correct age-related vision changes, when the ability to see clearly at different distances decreases. These lenses have several optical zones that provide a smooth transition between near, intermediate, and distance vision. During fitting, the specialist takes into account visual parameters, the patient’s age, the degree of presbyopia, the specifics of visual workload, and lifestyle. An essential stage is the adaptation period, during which comfort and quality of vision are assessed. Properly fitted multifocal contact lenses provide natural vision, freedom of movement, and a high quality of life without the need to use glasses.
